Key Initiatives

Hokkaido University possesses rich assets, including a large, lush green campus that serves as a living laboratory in a cold, snowy region, the world’s largest experimental forest of 70,000 hectares, and rural fields in coastal areas.

The Institute for the Advancement of Sustainability utilizes these assets to: confront the global challenge of climate change; achieve carbon neutrality at Hokkaido University; create a sustainable, hybrid campus that fosters continuous innovation in education and research; contribute to international efforts to halt and reverse biodiversity loss; and deepen engagement with stakeholders both within and beyond the university.
