This page presents Hokkaido University’s recent achievements and history in sustainability.
Among them, the sections highlighted in light green represent initiatives led primarily by the Institute for the Advancement of Sustainability (or its predecessor organizations).

2020

Hokkaido University was awarded Gold Certification from the Sustainable Campus Assessment System (ASSC).

Hokkaido University Ranked 76th in the World (and 1st in Japan) in “THE Impact Rankings 2020.”

2021

Hokkaido University established the Institute for the Advancement of Sustainability, which includes the Sustainable Campus Management Office and the newly created SDGs Initiative Office.

Hokkaido University was awarded Platinum Certification from the Sustainable Campus Assessment System (ASSC).

Hokkaido University Ranked 1st in Japan (tied with six universities) in “THE University Impact Rankings 2021,” placed 101–200 in the world.

Co-hosted “ASCN 2022 Annual Conference” with CAS-Net JAPAN

Hokkaido University Ranked 10th in the World (and 1st in Japan) in “THE Impact Rankings 2022.”

2023

Hokkaido University Ranked 22nd in the World (and 1st in Japan for fourth consecutive year) in “THE Impact Rankings 2023.”

Formulated “HU VISION 2030”versity, established by

2024

“Sustainable Campus Management (SCM) Office” was renamed the “Campus Management Division,” and the “SDGs Initiative Office” was renamed the “SDGs Initiative Division.”

Hokkaido University Ranked 72nd in the World (and 1st in Japan for fifth consecutive year) in “THE Impact Rankings 2024.”

Carbon Neutrality Initiative Division established; three-division structure introduced.

2025

Hokkaido University Ranked 44th in the World
(and 1st in Japan for sixth consecutive year)
 in “THE Impact Rankings 2025.”
